Each One Teach One – Anti-Racism

Notes on Terminology

The group acknowledge, and are conscious of, the contested and changing nature of all the language used when speaking about ‘race’ as difference – or indeed any other aspects of social differences.  We also appreciate the intersectional nature of people’s lives/positioning/standpoints and their experiences of oppression, healing, resilience and survival.  The ‘BAME’ Over website has a very useful reflection and guide on the use of language in naming groups of people when considering the matter of ‘race’ (https://incarts.uk/%23’BAME’over-the-statement). The term Black and Global Majority is becoming more widely used when referring to minority and minoritized groups of individuals and communities. This view suggests that people of colour can be seen as a majority, not a minority, across the globe. Government agencies too are now rejecting the term BAME; often now seen as a being used as an aggregate term, negating the range of differences within such groups. Aims: To bring about systematic change in our partner organisations we will…. 

  • Name ‘racism’ wherever we see it
  • Listen, hear and include all People with Lived Experience
  • Take responsibility
  • Work collaboratively
  • Challenge appropriately
  • Be open to learning
  • Ensure all feel included acknowledging the intersectional nature of the experience of racism
  • Acknowledging everyone’s humanity

Objectives:

  1. Take responsibility as individuals, groups and communities to educate self and others on what Black Lives Matter means (current and historical).
  2. Inspire and recruit like-minded individuals to engage with this group.
  3. Develop a knowledge base of the needs of the black and minority ethnic communities (including communities within our partnership – Students, Practice Educators, ASYE’s, Social Workers, Managers, People with Lived Experience and Academics) to learn and share across our partnership.
  4. Create an environment where we encourage people to become champions from within and beyond the black and minority ethnic community.
  5. Commit to creating safe spaces for black and minority ethnic students and Social Workers to engage in dialogue.
  6. Through engaging with communities encourage people to enter the Social Work profession
  7. Widening participation and engagement across all aspects of pre and post qualifying education, training and practice.

Each One Teach One – LGBTQ+

Aim: An ongoing working group in the CMSWTP region, composed of practice partners and HEI representatives and where feasible students and People with Lived Experience, that seek to improve the sector’s engagement with LGBTQ+ people. This group will have some ongoing and some time-limited activities. 

Objectives

  • Support the Cheshire and Merseyside Social Work Teaching Partnership partner organisations to engage as individuals, groups and communities about a broad range of LGBTQ+ inclusivity topics, with a specific focus on those groups most likely to come into contact/need the support of social care services.
  • Create an environment across the region that encourages practitioners to become champions from within and beyond the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Provide a safe space and regular meetings where supportive critique can be used to examine how TP member organisations can improve their services and staff support in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity/expression (SOGIE).
  • Develop a knowledge base of the specific needs of LGBTQ+ people (including communities within our partnership – Students, Practice Educators, ASYE’s, Social Workers, Managers and Academics) to learn and share across our partnership.
  • By engaging with current best evidence, make recommendations for the current types of LGBTQ+ awareness training and development provided by our 4 HEIs on their pre-qualifying programmes and by our partners to their workforce, with a goal to improve social work practice and support of LGBTQ+ people.
